eSIM for Europe vs. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile Roaming: What a Trip Really Costs

Your US carrier charges the same daily rate everywhere in Europe — and it adds up fast. Here's what a week (or two) costs, and how one eSIM covers 36 destinations for less.

Is Europe one zone?

Not exactly — and the answer is different for every carrier here. Quick version before the details:

  • AT&T & Verizon

Yes. $12/day on AT&T, $12/day on Verizon, in every European country — crossing a border the same day doesn't add a second charge.

  • T-Mobile

Depends on your plan. Experience Beyond/Go5G Next and Experience More/Go5G Plus/Magenta MAX get high-speed data everywhere in Europe; Go5G and Magenta get it only in 11 countries, then 256 kbps everywhere else.

  • FairSIM

One Europe Extra eSIM works in 36 destinations — all 27 EU countries plus the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Turkey and more — at one price.

Am I already covered?

Quick answer by carrier, before the cost breakdown.

  • AT&T

    No — it's a paid add-on

International Day Pass bills $12 for every day your phone connects anywhere in Europe, capped at 10 days per bill period ($120). Nothing is included on the plan itself.

  • Verizon

    No — it's a paid add-on

TravelPass bills $12 per line for every day used, in every European country. There's no cap: two weeks is 15 charges, $180.

  • T-Mobile

    Depends on your plan

Full-speed data is free on Experience More/Beyond and Go5G Plus/Next tiers. On Go5G or Magenta it's free in only 11 countries, then 256 kbps everywhere else in Europe. Calls are $0.50/min regardless of plan.

  • AT&T and Verizon charge only on days your phone connects somewhere in Europe; AT&T stops charging after 10 daily fees per bill period ($120), Verizon never does.
  • T-Mobile: full-speed data is free in 215+ countries (including all of Europe) on Experience More/Beyond and Go5G Plus/Next, but only in 11 European countries on Go5G/Magenta — then 256 kbps everywhere else. Calls are $0.50/min on every tier.
  • FairSIM: one Europe Extra eSIM works in all 36 destinations at the price shown, whatever countries you cross.

AT&T in Europe: International Day Pass

AT&T doesn't include Europe on any postpaid plan. AT&T International Day Pass switches on the first time your phone connects abroad and bills one flat daily fee for every European country you use it in that day — data, calls and texts drawn from your home plan.

AT&T in Europe: International Day Pass
OptionPriceNotes
Day Pass, first line$12/dayCharged only on days the phone actually connects somewhere in Europe
Day Pass, each additional line$6/dayFor other lines on the same account, on the same day
Maximum per line, per bill period$12010 daily fees; service continues at no extra charge after that

The cap is real and documented: AT&T's support article states you'll never pay more than 10 daily fees per line, per bill period, for land and air travel. After day 10 the line keeps working for the rest of the bill period at no extra charge — so a 15-day trip costs $120, not 15 × $12. One catch: if your trip straddles two bill periods, the count starts again.

Hotspot: AT&T says it depends on your specific domestic plan. We couldn't confirm a blanket yes or no, so check with AT&T before you count on tethering a laptop.

On AT&T Prepaid?

International Day Pass is postpaid-only. AT&T Prepaid sells a separate international add-on instead — $35 for 7 days with 5GB of data. That's a fixed price, but a hard data cap, and it's a different product with its own terms.

Verizon in Europe: TravelPass

Verizon TravelPass works the same way in every European country: $12 per line for every day you use your phone, drawing on your home plan. Verizon includes unlimited talk, text and data on TravelPass days — hotspot too — which makes it one of the clearer positives across either carrier's terms.

Data before slowdown5 GB/day5GB of high-speed data per day, then 3G speeds until the next day

Check Verizon's own country list before you rely on a third-party guide — some wrongly leave out countries like Estonia or Andorra that Verizon does cover.

TravelPass has no cap. There's no per-trip or per-billing-cycle ceiling: $12 a day for every day used, so a 15-day trip is $180. That's the difference between Verizon and AT&T at two weeks — $180 versus $120.

Longer trip? Verizon has a cheaper option

For trips of 9 days or more, Verizon's $100 International Monthly Plan (20GB high-speed, then 3G, for the whole billing cycle) usually beats paying the daily TravelPass rate for every day.

FairSIM Europe Extra: plans and coverage

With FairSIM you buy a data package for the trip itself, separate from your US plan — one eSIM, one price, every country on the list below. The calculator above uses the 10GB plan for a week and Unlimited for two.

  • 10GB / 30 days: $19.99
  • 5GB / 30 days: $11.99
  • 1GB / 7 days: $5.99
  • Unlimited / 15 days: $49.99

36 destinations on one plan

All 27 EU member states, plus:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, Vatican City.

Not covered — a common source of confusion for Balkans and microstate side trips:

Ukraine, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Kosovo.

Staying in one country? A single-country plan can be cheaper — e.g. Italy Unlimited/15 days is $33.99.

Install it before you leave the US. When you land — in Paris, Rome, Berlin, wherever the trip starts — your data is already working: no airport kiosk, no pickup counter, no hunting for WiFi to set anything up.

Set it up before you travel by following the steps in the app — or read the full how eSIM works guide if it's your first time.

It's data only — keep your US SIM for calls and codes

FairSIM doesn't carry your US number. Calls, texts and the banking or 2FA codes tied to it still arrive on your US SIM. Turn off data roaming on that line so AT&T's Day Pass or Verizon's TravelPass doesn't quietly trigger, keep it active for calls and texts, and let FairSIM handle data. That's the one practical step worth doing before you leave.

T-Mobile in Europe: free, but plan- and country-dependent

Let's state the headline number first: on a T-Mobile Experience or Go5G plan, data in Europe costs $0 upfront. T-Mobile's international page confirms it. Roughly a third of US phones are on T-Mobile, so for a lot of readers the honest answer to "do I need anything?" starts with "maybe not" — but the details below decide whether that holds up.

The allowance depends on your specific plan tier:

T-Mobile in Europe: free, but plan- and country-dependent
Plan tierHigh-speed dataWhere
Experience Beyond 2.0 / Go5G Next15GB, then 256 kbps215+ countries & destinations, including all of Europe
Experience More 2.0 / Go5G Plus / Magenta MAX5GB, then 256 kbps215+ countries & destinations, including all of Europe
Go5G / Magenta5GB, then 256 kbps11 European countries only
Essentials 2.0NoneNone included

Here's the catch that matters most: France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Switzerland — some of the most-visited countries on the continent — are not on the 11-country list. On Go5G or Magenta, those destinations get 256 kbps only, from the first megabyte.

The 11 countries (Go5G/Magenta only):

Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia.

256 kbps is fine for messages and slow for maps; T-Mobile's own materials describe pages taking longer to load and video as not practical at that speed. It's a genuine wall for live transit directions between train platforms or camera translation of a menu.

Calls aren't included in the free data allowance either: $0.50 a minute, on every tier, including the paid pass.

T-Mobile's paid option: International Pass

If the cap worries you, T-Mobile sells a paid top-up, the International Pass.

The T-Mobile case for an eSIM: a supplement, not a replacement

Keep your T-Mobile line exactly as it is — free texts, free basic data, your own number for calls and verification codes. Add a FairSIM eSIM for the moments 256 kbps isn't enough, or for the eight countries the 11-country list skips: full-speed maps, translation and payments for $19.99 on the 10GB plan. You don't replace what's free; you back it up where it runs out.

Why eSIM wins for Europe

See Europe plans
  1. One eSIM, 36 destinations

Cross borders without thinking about it — the same plan that works in Paris keeps working in Berlin and Vienna the next day.

  2. A fraction of the daily-pass cost

$19.99 for a week (10GB) versus $84 on AT&T or $84 on Verizon for the same seven days.

  3. No day-counting, no caps, no billing-cycle math

One fixed price for the trip — not AT&T's daily fees and bill-period cap, and not Verizon's $12 a day with no ceiling at all.

  4. Full speed where T-Mobile's base tier throttles

Go5G and Magenta only get high-speed data in 11 countries, then 256 kbps everywhere else; a FairSIM eSIM covers all 36 destinations at full speed.

  5. Keep your US number

Calls, texts and 2FA codes stay on your home SIM; FairSIM just handles the data.

Frequently asked questions

Is Europe one roaming zone for US carriers?

For AT&T and Verizon, yes — one flat daily rate, $12 and $12, in every European country. For T-Mobile it depends on your plan: Experience Beyond/Go5G Next and Experience More/Go5G Plus/Magenta MAX get high-speed data everywhere in Europe; Go5G and Magenta get it in only 11 countries.

Does EU free roaming ("Roam Like at Home") apply to my US phone?

No. "Roam Like at Home" is for SIMs issued by an EU carrier, moving between EU countries. A US SIM was never part of that system, whichever carrier issued it.

How much does AT&T or Verizon charge for a week in Europe?

$84 each: seven days at $12 a day. At 15 days they diverge — AT&T caps you at 10 daily fees per bill period ($120), while Verizon has no cap and bills all 15 days ($180).

Is T-Mobile's free roaming enough in Europe? Which 11 countries get high-speed data?

On Experience More/Beyond or Go5G Plus/Next, yes — full speed everywhere in Europe. On Go5G or Magenta, full speed is limited to 11 countries: Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Switzerland are not on that list — those get 256 kbps from the first megabyte on the base tier.

Does one FairSIM eSIM work in every country on my trip?

Yes, across all 36 Europe Extra destinations — the full country list is on this page and in the app before you buy. A short list of nearby countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Ukraine and a few microstates) isn't included; a separate plan in the app covers some of those.

Is the UK or Switzerland included?

Yes — both are on Europe Extra, alongside Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, Serbia and Moldova, none of which the three US carriers treat any differently from EU countries.

Can I still get texts and calls on my US number?

Yes — on your US SIM, not on FairSIM. FairSIM is data only. Keep your US line active alongside it for calls, texts and verification codes, and let FairSIM carry the data.

Should I buy a single-country plan or Europe Extra?

If the whole trip stays in one country, a single-country plan is usually cheaper — Italy Unlimited/15 days, for example, is $33.99. The moment the itinerary crosses a border, Europe Extra's one price for 36 destinations wins on both cost and convenience.

What happens if I run out of data on the FairSIM plan?

Top up or move to a bigger plan in the app anytime. Nothing is charged automatically unless you turn on Auto top-up — otherwise a plan simply stops when its data or validity runs out, so there's no overage to worry about.
