Book Turkish hotels on Booking.com before you land; the site is blocked for domestic bookings once you are in the country.

5G is new and city-centre only. Expect solid 4G elsewhere, which is fine for maps and streaming.

Can you rely on free Wi-Fi?
Istanbul's free ibbWiFi covers about 11,500 spots after SMS registration, including the T1 tram and M2 metro, but slows badly at peak hours. Istanbul Airport gives one free hour. Hotels and cafés are generally good; rural Cappadocia and coastal coves are hit and miss.
Local SIM card or eSIM in Turkey?
Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom sell tourist packs against your passport at Istanbul, Sabiha Gökçen and Antalya airports. The Turkcell Tourist Welcome Pack runs about ₺1,800, roughly $40 to $45, for 20 GB and 28 days, and airport prices run higher. There is no anonymous prepaid.
The bigger issue is the IMEI rule: a foreign phone works with a Turkish SIM for 120 days, after which it must be registered for a 2026 fee of ₺54,258, about $1,200, or it is blocked on Turkish lines. The block only applies to Turkish SIM and eSIM profiles. A FairSIM eSIM roams on Turkish networks and is not subject to it.

Does eSIM work in Turkey?
Yes. Unlocked eSIM phones connect to Turkcell or Türk Telekom 4G and 5G with a travel eSIM.
Which network does a Turkey eSIM use?
Usually Turkcell, the largest and fastest network, sometimes Türk Telekom. Both cover Istanbul, the coast and Cappadocia well. The app shows the network for each plan.
Is there 5G in Turkey?
Yes, since April 2026 in all provincial centres. Elsewhere you get solid 4G LTE.
Does the 120-day IMEI rule affect a travel eSIM?
No. The IMEI block applies to phones using Turkish SIM profiles. A foreign travel eSIM roams, so your phone is not blocked after 120 days.

Do WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work?

What is an eSIM?

Is my phone compatible?

When should I install my eSIM?
Before you travel, while you still have Wi-Fi. Installing does not start your plan; the validity typically starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination.
Do FairSIM eSIMs come with a phone number?
No. FairSIM eSIMs are data-only by design, which keeps costs low. For calls and texts, your physical SIM stays active so you keep your existing number, and WhatsApp, FaceTime and iMessage work over data.
