Connectivity tips for Italy
Install the eSIM at home. Fiumicino, Malpensa and Venice airports have strong 5G, so it connects on landing.
The Europe regional plan covers Italy plus France, Spain, Austria and the rest of the EU. Vatican City uses Italian networks; San Marino and Switzerland do not, so check the list.
Sicily and Sardinia are on the same national networks, no separate plan needed, but inland coverage is weaker than on the coast.
Dolomites and Apennine hikes: download offline Google Maps and trail maps. Signal drops in valleys and at huts.
High-speed trains have free Wi-Fi that throttles video. Your eSIM is faster except in the many tunnels on the Florence to Bologna line.

Can you rely on free Wi-Fi?
Decent in hotels and cafés, inconsistent in public spaces. The free WiFi Italia app connects to around 28,000 hotspots but needs registration and coverage is thin outside squares and railway stations. Frecciarossa and Italo trains offer free but slow onboard Wi-Fi.
Local SIM card or eSIM in Italy?
Passport registration for every prepaid SIM has been mandatory in Italy since 2005. The shop scans your passport and activation can take a few hours. TIM Tourist is the classic option at about €25 in store with the SIM fee, physical SIM only, no online purchase. Vodafone may ask for a codice fiscale and Iliad requires an ID scan at a kiosk.
