Connectivity tips for Austria
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and switch data on when you land in Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck. It connects to A1 or Drei automatically.

Hallstatt station is across the lake from the village and a boat meets the trains. Check the ÖBB app for the connection, and arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm to avoid the coach slots.
Ski resorts have solid 4G and often 5G at lifts and in the villages. Download offline maps and piste maps for off-piste days and hut-to-hut hikes.
Railjet Wi-Fi shares the same networks as your eSIM and drops in the same valleys, so download a film before the Innsbruck to Vienna run.
Keep your home SIM active for banking SMS codes and turn off its data roaming to avoid daily passes.
Emergency number 112 works from any phone; 140 is the Alpine rescue line in the mountains.
Can you rely on free Wi-Fi?
Good in the cities. Vienna runs about 400 free public hotspots around the Ring, the Graben and the Rathausplatz. The Freewave network adds more than 850 in cafés and hotels nationwide. ÖBB Railjets and Cityjets have free OEBB Wi-Fi, but it rides on mobile coverage and fades in the mountains. Ski huts and small villages often have none.
Local SIM card or eSIM in Austria?
Prepaid SIMs are sold at A1, Magenta and Drei shops, trafik kiosks and supermarket checkouts at Hofer, Spar and Billa. A1's tourist SIM costs about €10, with plans from €9.90 for 5 GB. Magenta is €9.90 for 10 GB, and Drei is the cheapest at about €7 for 15 GB. Since 2019 every SIM must be registered against a passport or EU ID card before it works, and a driving licence does not count.
For most visits a travel eSIM is the simpler choice: no passport at a counter, no waiting for activation, no physical SIM swap, and the Europe regional plan works across the EU. A local SIM only wins if you need an Austrian number for a season job or a flat.
