Typical speed: City 4G is comfortable for maps, calls and streaming. Speeds drop on hill-country roads, in tea estates and on the long stretches of the A-roads between towns.

Connectivity tips for Sri Lanka
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, then enable the line and data roaming after you land at Bandaranaike. Validity usually starts at first connection to a Sri Lankan network.
Sort your ETA or visa on the official immigration portal before departure and save the approval offline. Lookalike sites charge extra for the same thing.
Download all of Sri Lanka in Google Maps offline. The hill-country roads, park approaches and northern stretches lose signal.
Use PickMe for tuk-tuks rather than agreeing a price on the street; the metered fare is usually much lower.
Reserve hill-country train seats online well ahead in high season, and expect little or no signal in the tunnels between Kandy and Ella.
Carry a power bank. Long jeep mornings, train days and occasional power cuts all drain a phone that is running GPS.
Keep your home SIM active for bank one-time codes, with its own data roaming switched off so you are not billed twice.
Bring a Type D or G adapter; sockets vary by building age, and many guesthouses have both.
Can you rely on free Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is everywhere in tourist Sri Lanka, in guesthouses, cafes, Colombo hotels and beach restaurants, and it ranges from fine to unusable. Fibre reaches the main towns, but many south coast and hill-country properties share a single line with every guest, and it slows to a crawl in the evening. Power interruptions still hit some rural areas, which takes the router with them. Treat Wi-Fi as a bonus for big downloads and rely on the eSIM for maps, calls and work.
Local SIM card or eSIM in Sri Lanka?
Dialog and Mobitel both run counters in the arrivals hall at Bandaranaike International, and tourist packs are genuinely cheap in dollar terms: a bundle of data plus local minutes and a Sri Lankan number, valid for a month. You hand over your passport, they register the line, and it works on the drive to Negombo or Colombo. If you want a local number for calling guesthouses and drivers who do not use WhatsApp, this is the reason to buy one.
The trade-offs are the queue after a night flight, the passport registration, top-ups you have to manage in Sinhala-language USSD menus or an app, and the fact that a physical SIM means swapping out your home line. Does eSIM work in Sri Lanka?
Yes. An unlocked eSIM phone connects to Mobitel, Dialog or Hutch with a travel eSIM. On iPhone that means XS, XR or newer; most recent Pixel, Galaxy S and Galaxy A models also support eSIM.
Which network will my Sri Lanka eSIM use?
Mobitel, Dialog or Hutch. Mobitel is the only one of the three with 5G available here; Dialog has the widest 4G reach outside the cities. The app shows the network for each plan.
Is there 5G in Sri Lanka?
Only in limited urban areas, and on Mobitel. Dialog and Hutch connections through the eSIM are 4G LTE. Across most of the island, including the hill country and the coasts, you should plan on 4G.
Do WhatsApp calls work in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Sri Lanka does not restrict internet calling, so WhatsApp, FaceTime and Zoom calls work over mobile data as normal.
Can I use Personal Hotspot?

Should I install the eSIM before or after I land?

How much data do I need for two weeks in Sri Lanka?
Maps, WhatsApp, bookings and some social use run around 1 to 1.5 GB a day, so 10 to 20 GB covers a typical two-week loop. Go higher if you stream or work remotely.
Will I have signal on the Kandy to Ella train and in the national parks?
Patchy. The train loses signal in tunnels and deep cuttings, and Yala, Wilpattu and Horton Plains have real dead zones. Download maps and tickets before you set off.
Local SIM or travel eSIM for Sri Lanka?
A local tourist SIM at the airport is cheap and gives you a Sri Lankan number, but it needs a passport registration and a queue. A FairSIM eSIM is installed before you fly, uses the same networks, and keeps your home number active alongside it.

When should I install my eSIM?
Before you travel, while you still have Wi-Fi. Installing does not start your plan; the validity typically starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination.
